Grand Chief, A Great Man

By Nick Laki Facebook Sharp Talk

On the night of 15 September 1975 – when everyone was sleeping, not wishing something good would happen to Papua New Guinea, where was Sir Michael camping, what was he thinking and whom was he with? He was sleepless moving from house to house, ( not by mobile phone nor email like today) but by person to person uniting Papua New Guinea forming a name called PANGU waiting ...for the dawn of a new nation.
The old Davara hotel, what is now Ela beach is an old camping ground for the old man in POM ( not sure but that was where Sir Michael looking across that not-far horizon dreaming what good could happen to PNG).
Fast forward 37 years in Independent PNG politics, 3 heart surgeries, and about 4 successive terms as PM later....he is camping at Ela Beach still (some place which house whispers of the past don’t change). And this night/morning he was with his generals, some of whom has smeared his name and integrity. The nation was asleep with division and confusion. Yes he had some blood on his hands, unfinished business and bad decisions that led his children to fight amongst themselves and quarrel with foreigners over land and resources. But oh he might have been in his sickbed but his time was not yet up…
Today, many are hitting their chest because of money, fame, fortunes and saying they can do this, that etc...When the entire land of PNG was dark, this guy, saw a light...And he still says he wotn give up...(I heard him running the same road he ran last 44 years ago???)
Some of his children deserted him and like Absalom went to the city gates prematurely looking for approval among the people, when David was in his sickbed...they plot to overthrow him when he was down and dormant...they seek to kill him before his time, they go look for prophets to lay their hands on them....they go to the masses and sit on cane chairs and allow themselves to be exalted, they get drunk and invite their friends over and try to shift followers of sacred covenant to their side...they promise those who follow them wealth and try to plunder the supply house of this nation to buy loyalty. Their lust for blood and power make them walk at night to look for the common seal of approval from a high priest who is confused and uncertain about his own future..
Come morning and the old man would rise...and Absalom will go....He is not history yet until his time come to its end. He will go. In his time.
This morning is still his season...old and frail as he is...camping in his old grounds, yet again waiting for morning to take over the reigns for the last time...
We will miss you Sir Michael. Thank you for uniting Papua New Guinea and giving us faith in ourselves as a nation. May God be with you in this last journey of leading this country and give you peace. Let your heart not be troubled and bitter, for you were made for this season, for a time such as this.
You can quit politics today but your legacy lives on…Thankyou Sir Michael Thomas Somare…Trupela Pikinini Sepik!
Lots of love for you Grand Chief!
