PNG parliament dissolved paving way for poll

Rumours had been swirling that parliament would see another move to defer the mid-year election after the government's failed attempt in April.

Instead a motion was quickly passed to dissolve parliament and allow the election to proceed.

Prime minister Peter O'Neill said it had been a privilege to lead the country after he replaced Sir Michael Somare in controversial circumstances last August.

He paid special tribute to two retiring MPs - opposition leader Dame Carol Kidu and former prime minister Sir Mekere Morauta.

Writs are due to be issued on Friday, signalling the start of the election campaign period.

Voting begins in late June.
