Vote Along Party Lines

By Nathan Dingu

Vote Along Party Lines!
While many of us campaign for individuals, we must come to terms with politics in Papua New Guinea. In Papua New Guinea, the Political Party with the largest number of candidates is invited to form government straight after elections by the Governor General. This is according to the Organic Law of Integrity of Political Parties.

With this in mind, we must come to realize the following facts. An independent candidate who is not with a current political party in terms of forming government will be nothing but a pawn, which can be bought and traded.

Once they have been bought off they shall behave much like what we have seen in the last 9 months in the 8th Parliament whereby MP’s have voted not using the right the people had vested in them but instead vote according to the “paymaster’s” wished. They shall become what had been defined as “yoyos”. A definition that fits well with most government MP’s today!

This is the reason why we have seen controversy after controversy, law after law being broken, new laws being legislated without being debated! Most MP’s had been bought off, they are voting on the floor of Parliament without thinking! They are voting only in accordance to their ‘paymasters’ wishes.

An independent candidate might be the “brightest of them all,” however without an allegiance, without the ability to maneuver and be part of a greater TEAM vying for the same development, they will be wasting their time! After five years we shall be asking them the many things we have been asking today, “What have you done in your term in parliament to want to be voted back in?”

This is the reason why I wish to put this information across to all of you so that good Political Parties can be identified! Parties whom its policies have been defined and whose members live within the contexts of the Laws and Constitution of Papua New Guinea! Parties with proven track records!

Two political parties come to mind with proven track records that time and time again have stood by the Laws that make up this nation, Papua New Guinea. These two parties or not new political parties, they have in fact stood for the idea of Independence from Day One.

These parties, much in the same way when Moses sent out twelve spies only to find out that two had the faith and courage to claim a Promise that God had already given them! Yes indeed it was Joshua and Caleb who led Israel into the land of the Canaanites, the Promised Land! Flowing With Milk and Honey!

Pangu Pati and Melanesian Alliance, these parties have stood back to back when they faced stiff opposition as to whether they were ready for Independence or not! These political Parties have indeed fought the good fight; they have brought this nation thus far!

While we stand back and look at track records, no one is new to the leaders that Pangu has produced, in the likes of Sir Michael Somare, Sir Julius Chan, Paias WIngti, Iambaki Okuk, Sir Rabie Namaliu. Indeed this party though many of its members have moved on has proven to be the “peoples Choice!” The Party with the largest array of PM’s that any other party!

Melanesian Alliance on the other hand while not being as popular as Pangu Party has always been at the background, giving the support that was needed by its sister party Pangu. Indeed as far as track record, speak for itself, Melanesian Alliance has produced its own caliber of leaders in the likes of Bernard Narakobi, John Momis, Sir Joh Kaputin and our much loved Lady Carol Kidu. In the same way that Caleb took over Joshua, shall the Melanesian Alliance lead this nation for the next 40 years?

While I present these two parties, may I also remind you all once again, that voting along political party lines is more important today than any other time in PNG History! Yes indeed classify for yourself and choose wisely!

Happy Voting 2012 National Elections
