MINISTER for Treasury Don Pomb Polye has called on both sides of the House to use the elections as an opportunity to heal wounds and reconcile.
Polye, the leader of the Triumph Heritage Empowerment Party, told the last sitting of parliament that since the political impasse, leaders on both sides had been hurt and that should not be allowed to continue.
He said the election should be used to heal wounds – meaning the difference resulting from the political impasse and other politically-motivated differences and holding hands to enter the elections.
Polye said the general election should be seen as an opportunity for reconciliation and unity as brothers who after three months would return to serve the people and move the country forward.
He said it was important to forgive and forget and work towards a common goal of serving the people and country.
Polye, who held key ministries and served twice as deputy prime minister under Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare before breaking away to form his own party, also took the time to thank Sir Michael for giving him the opportunity to exposure his leadership qualities.
He said it was not easy to come this far but credit must go to where it was due.
– and Sir Michael had to be thanked for grooming many young leaders.
He said he had learnt a lot although there were differences within the party.
Polye also took the time to thank development partners such as AusAID, NZAID, Chinese government, Korean, World Bank, IMF and Asian Development Banks that have assisted in the development of the country.
Polye also thanked his people of Kandep for electing him for the last two terms and for electing him twice on the first preferential votes.
