Minister criticises government

A STATE minister has accused the government of being as corrupt as the one it ousted last August.

Education minister Theodore Zurenuoc, the deputy parliamentary leader of the People’s Progress Party, said there had been a lot of talk about fighting corruption but the government failed to implement measures to eradicate it.

The Finschhafen MP was in Eastern Highlands province campaigning for PPP candidates in Kainantu, Lufa, Goroka and Watabung.

He told people at each of the venues that the Peter O’Neill-led government of which he is a minister, was “just as corrupt as the Somare regime, if not more”.

“The government undermined the constitution. It forced changes to legislation for its own ends,” he said.

“It corrupted the army and the police force and attacked the judiciary, the last bastion of democracy.”

He said the country needed principled and ethical leaders to provide a very high quality of leadership style to save the country.

“There is a real lack of honest, credible, morally principled and ethical leadership in the country. Most of our current crops of leaders are either corrupt or morally compromised,” he stated.

Zurenuoc admitted that the party became part of the government and managed to implement one of its fundamental policies – free and subsidised education.

“All leaders of parties in the coalition are beating their chests and claiming credit for what is rightfully due to the Peoples Progress Party.’’

He said Papua New Guineans must listen carefully to the policies of the candidates and assess them critically before voting.
